The Music of Monk and Miles

Once again back at St. Mary's church in Twyford - this time a solo piano recital featuring my versions of compositions by Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. Saturday 8th July 2023 at 8.00 pm

ORBIT DEBUT 21st OCTOBER 2022

Orbit is my new group, originally formed just before covid struck and inactive since then. But now resurrected for our debut at St. Paul's church in Winchester. We are: Lewis Wood, violin, Patrick Naylor, guitar, Iqbal Pathan on tabla, with myself on piano. Our repertoire is not the usual jazz fare, and is an amalgam of influences from around the world - medieval Constantinople, Irish folk songs, reggae, music from Latin America and north Africa, all interwoven with the band’s original compositions. Expect the unexpected ... St. Paul's Church, St. Paul's Hill, Winchester SO22 5AB, at 8.00 on 21st. October. Tickets £15 from orbit-jazz.eventbrite.co.uk

First gig since covid!

Saturday 11th June 2022 at 8 pm. Returning at last to St. Mary's church in Twyford, near Winchester, after a long break ... this time a trio with Tim Wells on double bass and Iqbal Pathan on tabla. Haven't played in this combination before ... should be interesting!

October 2019

Busy month - a solo recital at Winchester College Music School, and performances at Winchester's Nutshell Arts Centre, and the Pallant Gallery in Chichester.

Jazz at St. Mary's

Another concert at St. Mary's church in Twyford, Winchester on Friday 31st. May 2019. With me will be Shanti Jayasinha, the wonderful trumpet and flugelhorn player. We start at 7.30 - should be a great gig, and hope to see you there.

Red Piano

I'll be dropping in to London's Royal Academy on 6th December 2018 to perform on Michael Parehowhai's extraordinary carved red piano, an exhibit in the Oceania show - actually a Steinway concert grand in disguise!

Next Gig

Next gig - on January 22nd at St. Mary’s Church, Twyford,Winchester, Hants SO21 1NT. 7.30 start, tickets (£10) on the door or from Juliet Hawkes at julietahawkes@aol.com Like the last concert I gave there earlier this year, I’ll play solo, but I’m being joined in the second half by the great saxophonist Andy Panayi. Although we’ve played a lot together in various settings, the Twyford gig will be the first time for many years that we’ve appeared as a duo.I recently recorded four videos which will be posted on Youtube very shortly. The songs are ‘Fizzy Waltz’ and ‘Less’, both from the new album, ‘Coincidence’ and finally Charles Lloyd’s ‘Song’.

New Album - Less

12th December 2016 sees the launch of ‘Less’, a new solo piano CD. It represents a big departure from my previous solo piano album (‘Nowhere to Hide’). Recorded at the Turner Sims concert hall in Southampton (on the recommendation of Fred Hersch who told me he thought the Steinway there was particularly fine - he was right!), the new album has 14 tracks, 8 of them originals and 6 by jazz greats such as Monk, Wayne Shorter, and Bill Evans. No reviews yet - watch this space.
